December 2018 – Kos: Our Island Home

Construction progress at Sails On Kos - December 2018

Being small and family run, competing with the larger international chains of resorts on Kos was initially daunting. But Kos’ community continually remind us why we have come back to Greece, and why Kos is really something special. They helped us with water and electricity supply as we worked to get our own and connected us to local contacts for everything we could possibly need. We have even been donated a large olive tree from our neighbour! We are planting it at the entrance to our village to remind guests, locals and ourselves of how important friendship & community are. This month construction began. Although the majority of our structures are tents, our restaurant, reception, and pool are permanent buildings. Our team spent December laying all the electrical cables & plumbing for the whole village

Next up came the floors, support beams & pool infrastructure.

Our construction team did everything so accurately and meticulously. This significant progress on site filled our hearts with confidence and joy.

Our floor designs are really something special. We are using stamped concrete that has been laid out in an intricate design perfected by our engineer and designer. The design allows for a seamless, natural flow from reception to pathways, restaurant and the pool. It’s going to create a magical, open, and luxurious space for all our guests to enjoy. Although everything was work on site, it was hard not to stop and be awestruck by the amazing views in every direction. The mountains, the olive groves and the farms calm your mind and soul. All the stress melts away and you find yourself captivated by the landscape.

Throughout December we were blessed with crisp clear days, then rains descended upon the island filling up groundwater reserves fuller than they had been in 56 years. This is an amazing thing for an island that’s survival is dependent on groundwater. We are also excited for how beautiful Summer will be because of the rain.

However, for a building site rain is a challenge so our focus shifted to Athens, where our tents are being stitched, perfected, and manufactured for shipment to Kos. We’re working with a crew from the sailboat manufacturing industry, who are using all of their knowledge of canvas, stitching, sail design and durability. Their intricate know-how has helped us come up with innovative solutions to the construction of our tent designs. So, while the rain fell in Kos, we were in our warehouse in Athens building the tents, organising our furniture and ensuring everything else is ready to be erected once spring has sprung.

See you in January
Happy New Year
